As President of the Urban League of Champaign County, Illinois, there are few social, political or economic issues that don’t cross my desk at some point. I am often asked to provide my thoughts, perspective or expertise on what solutions might be best practice. Each week I will provide a comment, thought or perspective on the “Hot Topic of the Week.” I need your feedback. Give it to me; agree, disagree, or just offer your opinion.

We must operate from a place of trust. From what I've seen, communication and community trust building began with Chief Finney. We must always have leadership that the 'people' believe in.
A review board is a good idea but the problem cannot be fully resolved with reviewing situations. The problem I see with the community, including the police is that there is no prevention being preached. The police know where the trouble is, yet it is too much trouble to have a couple of officers to patrol those problem areas. Passing out speeding tickets is often more important that preventing crime. Rather they wait until there is a shot fired, then they are racing down Bradley to get to the scene. By then it is too late, and there is always the "we would have, and we should haves" being passed around. The best way to cure a disease is to prevent it from happening in the first place. We need a Preview and Review Community Board.
