Increased Shooting Violence
Since May, there has been a marked increase in shooting violence in Champaign and Urbana. Most of this violence is Black on Black crime, but not exclusively and it has culminated in the shooting of three Champaign Police Officers. While I understand the shootings of the officers was done by a clearly disturbed individual. I am concerned that if a clear plan of action is not put in place, these incidents may continue to escalate, until an innocent person is shot or we become a community polarized with a combated police department and living life in fear.

The problem that we are currently having in our area is one that is a result of a rippling effect in our communities. Inner city buildings in larger cities such as Chicago are being torn down and the people are being displaced. Because of this displacement many individuals are winding up on the door steps of our community. Some come with good intentions but others may have the same devious mentality that they have when they left these larger cities. Without being able to relocate into a stable yet productive socioeconomic setting for these individuals, many are doomed to repeat the same behaviors when they arrive here. This is just one example, but there are many others reasons why our community is become so hostile.
